59 Chevy truck gas tank and fuel system
Good evening on the end of 2012! Happy New year out there!
I’ve just wrapped up installing my after market gas tank from Brotherstrucks.com! This truck originally came with the tank behind the seat, but who does that any more? ; ) I’ve had this tank for about a year or more. I had purchased a bunch of goodies from Brothers when they had many parts on sale for about 1/2 price!
Well, here goes, finally getting to test fit the tank here and taking advantage of my Little Mule II! My little shop crane of which I have two of. These can be seen in my tool section. Since I work alone, the little Mule is a must!
Here the tank isn’t permanently bolted up yet. The tank is really neat! It is almost a direct bolt in, I just had to drill some holes.
Here I have my Carter electric fuel pump from Summit racing bolted up to the frame affixed on rubber mounts to hopefully reduce some noise from the pump. I’m not the greatest at bending fuel line, that’s for sure, but I got the job done. I just need to put some small brackets on the fuel line and bolt them down. I didn’t want any rubber lines, so it’s hard lined!
Here the gas tank is permanently mounted, but still some minor things to do ~ like hook it up!
Hook it up meaning, the hot wire to the fuel pump and a vent hose off the top of the gas tank. I haven’t figured out what to do about a gas filler hose system to go into the bed of the truck, but that will be a while~ or not? ; ) I’ve made some remarkable progress! See how the tank fits almost perfectly between the cross members? They really thought this one out for us DIY’ers! ; )
Thinking ahead, just in case I have to ever pull the tank down, I installed to gas cutoffs to completely shut the gas off! One to drain the gas tank too! I’ll have to safety wire them closed/open! I’d hate to be driving it some day and the drain valve was to open and loose all my gas! Or, the other closes and shuts the fuel supply off!
This next part is connecting the rear fuel line to the front~ making it all the way to the new Edelbrock carburetor.
I’m using 5/16 steel fuel line from Summit racing and the AN fitting as well. It’s kind of a plumbers nightmare trying to get the 5/16″ fuel line to capish with the AN fittings! But Summit was able to put it all together for me! ; )
I need to run the steel fuel line through the frame and be able to “bolt” it to the inside of the frame for a nice tidy look. Here the parts are laid out; )
Here the pieces of the puzzle are put together with the 5/16″ fuel line attached via the adapter. Kind of hideous, but will be inside the frame so looks doesn’t matter, just so long it doesn’t leak!!!
After fumbling around trying to get the fuel line into the freshly drilled hole, I slipped the blue nut on, and tightened it up! Notice the nice fuel line coming off of it! I’m happy!
At the carburetor, I hooked my steel braided hose to the Edelbrock carburetor fuel filter for a nice finished touch!
I still need to find some nice brackets for the braided line, but that will come in time!
This pretty much concludes the fuel system except for the day of starting the engine and hope all my hard work pays off! Until then, I hope you hang around and even subscribe to my Classic Cars and Tools and even write me if you’d like! Until then, Happy Motoring! dne’

Nice job on the fuel lines Dne’. I’m to that point on one of my trucks and I’ll be looking into these braided steel lines you used. I’ve “met” you over on 67-72chevytrucks, but first time I’ve ventured over to your blog. Some interesting reading here! –Rick

Fuel line looks great. Your detail work finishes everything off well. Keep up the good work and enjoy the first engine start – sounds like you are close.
Thanks Dave! I actually hooked up the battery; preliminary tests of course, turned the key and it does turn over! I was really worried about my wiring. Maybe next week I’ll get it started! ; )

I painted the dash as it was a necessary thing to do because of the botched radio panel. I found your site looking for a flywheel turner..go figure right..well i’m glad i stumbled across your blog..i’ve checked your posts about your projects and I give a hats off to your work..i’m currently building a 87 Regal that belonged to my grandmother. I belong to the site gbodyforum.com but post most of my updates to my Instagram lately since most of the members on gbodyforum are on IG now. I built a 355 for my regal and just installed it with a stage 3 700r4 last week after it came from the dyno shop. I enjoyed going over all of your project posts and keep up the awesome work.

Hi Leo! Thank you for stopping in at my site! I appreciate the kind words and eat up compliments!;) I just got through looking at the fabulous progress you’re making on your Regal! Incredible! Don’t you hate engine compartment detailing!lol I know how much work goes into that process! But in the long run, your new engine is going to look sweet in its new home! Oh, I love the Summit pistons, even though no one is ever going to see them! What is “instagram?”, is that a site you will have your build on? As for the flywheel turner, there are much lesser expensive ones available than a Snap-on that work just as well, I just happen to have it in my tool box and brag on it! lol Stay in touch~ I’d love to see what you’re up to! dne’
