67 Mustang 8″ rear axle
Hi! Dne’ here! ; ) This is a little blog about the stock rear axle in my ’67 Mustang. The blog, or story as I like to say, starts with when I got the Mustang here at our home. This Mustang had four lug suspension all the way around, but the Vin (vehicle identification number) revealed that this Mustang should have had a V8 engine. Mustangs with V8 engines would have had 5 lugs, not 4! I knew I was going to have to find a 8″ or 9″ rear axle anyway, so it didn’t really matter what it had! But it was a mystery!
When I look under my Mustang nowadays, I don’t remember how nasty it was when I first bought it! I drove to Dallas to get it; about a 4 hour drive. I probably could have bought one here, but this was a package deal to where I bought an engine, transmission, drive shaft and rear axle~ all for 1100 bucks!
This rear axle was nothing special except that it was originally from another 67 Mustang that had 80k miles on it. This rear axle had the stock gearing of 2:79 gear ratio. I made a stand for it to move it around. Rear axles are a pain to move around! They’re heavy!
The axle sat here for a long time until it was time to drag it out and clean it up!
The axles and backing plates were removed first, then I stood it up on its end to drain the old 90 weight. It had to be the original stuff and boy did it smell! I was not going to remove the “pumpkin” or the third member. I was just going to clean it up and hope for the best~!
I had blasted the backing plates in my Harbor Freight tools sand blasting cabinet.
I had sent the axles out to a friend to replace the rear axle bearings, so in the meantime, I wanted the backing plates to stay in place, otherwise the backing plates would just fall off if not bolted on to the axle flanges.
I drilled holes and taped the holes, then countersunk the backing plate where the screws were to be.
Installed the new axle seals; )
I then rolled the axle outside and used my sandblaster to remove the buildup which had accumulated over the years.
Shot some shiny black paint ; )
and it was ready to rock n roll! 😉

To this day, this axle serves me well! ; ) It makes no noise and still looks great! Not very many people get under my Mustang to look at it! How often does one do that! ha ha! It’s nice to say that this axle is still in service, an axle from another Mustang! Things were made well back then, not so long ago!

Nice job on the axle “overhaul”. My friends and I used to do that sort of thing with engines back in the 80’s. We called it a “Krylon” rebuild! Pull a motor, change the frost plugs, oil pan and valve cover gaskets, clean it up, and shoot a fresh coat of paint on it. A basic tune-up and we were in business.
As for your backing plate modification…awesome! That is a great idea! I may just have to do that to the 8″ in my 67 Convertible.

I just got an 8” for my 67 as an upgrade from the stock 4 lug setup as me and the wife want to do 5 lug all around for wheels and front discs! I will keep your overhaul choice in mind, though may replace the pumpkin gasket… the one I bought was COVERED in old oil… not sure where the leak was from.
Hi Peter, It’s a good idea to upgrade to the 5 lug, just limits what you can do with a 4 lug. If you can go with front discs and a power brake booster, it makes braking so much better! Probably the pinion seal leaking which gets on everything. Only so many places a differential can leak;) Keep me informed and good luck!

thanks Ted, I am in the same boat your were, my 65 came with 4 lugs, however, the title shows it as a K code, so I am also upgrading to an 8″ with 5 lugs. I know I probably should look for a 9″ but I found a great deal on an 8″ for $100.00. Maybe I can put a different gear in it, so I can achieve a posi rear end. Thanks again for sharing your post.
I see nothing wrong with the 8″, that’s what I have with a positrac too. However, I don’t try to always race my stang or smoke my tires! lol But you may want to shop for an 8″ posi diff now, they’re still pretty pricey. Let me know what you do! 😉
