Tr6 Battery tray cover
Hi, yes, it’s me again with an exciting blog!;)
This blog is about an idea that I had a while back. I wanted to make a cover for the entire battery tray from one side of the car to the other. Always looks like it needed a cover of sorts.
Though this newer tub was in decent shape, the battery tray area wasn’t in the best of shape, and I sure wasn’t about the try to replace it.
I call this blog the Battery tray cover, not a battery cover. The battery is situated in the trunk just like a miata.
Here was my idea put into cardboard seeing how it would look.
It would have looked OK, but it was a pain to get in and out. Underneath it would be some of the Miata electronics, relays, and I need access to underneath it so that top cover really needs to come off easily!!
Actually having fabricated it out of 22 gauge, it wasn’t looking half bad.
obviously this was a while back; I’m so glad I’m way past that point! Darn there was a lot of work going on at that time! eek! The tub wasn’t even painted yet!
However, I changed my mind with a revelation of a different idea(light bulb came on)! So, out with the tin snips, and gave the earlier idea a dissection to a different size. Smaller is better!!! 😉
IT was coming out as well as I had hoped. The top would be easily removed by 9 screws. The wiper motor would still be easily accessible as it would not be covered at all and for sure having access to the hood latch is a good idea!! Don’t worry, I had also installed the auxiliary hood latch opener!!
Now that I was pleased with the fabricating process, now was time to paint it to match the car. Hey, look in the background, there’s the old TR engine; not sure what I’ll be doing with that.
This is where my new 3m Accuspray gun came in handy! It’s extremely easy to clean and I can use small amounts of paint instead of a big bulky cup.
Installation was quite easy. Almost crossed my mind to put the battery underneath it. The Miata has a pretty small battery to begin with~ nah! 😉
I like it~! It also makes the engine look better!!
Over the past few months, I’ve been making incredible progress~ I’ll be posting updates soon!

Hi, Denee, great work on your project, as always. That’s going to be a really cool little car when you get done with it. I have been looking for a color code for a British green paint, like you used. Can you give me some info on that?
Good morning Gary! and thank you for the super positive comment;) On the BRG(British racing green), I had read somewhere, that over the course of time, there were variations of this color. Like from one TR (TR2,3,4, or 6). When it came time for me to buy it, the nearby automotive paint store didn’t have a book on it, and there was no paint code on the car anywhere. So I took a fender to the paint store and they used their scanner to identify the color and made a gallon of it for me. Is mine the actual True BRG? I have no idea! I do know that the color on the TR6 was a repaint, so someone may have made their best guess. I went looking on ebay at one time, and there are companies selling a gallon of BRG; is it the true BRG? If you’re not interested in it being the absolute BRG and like the color, I can send you the code number that I used, when I’ve ran low, I take the paint can and they scan the bar code and it duplicates the paint. The paint is use is the Shopline brand and I’ve had pretty good luck with it. Again, thank you as always Gary for hanging in there with me;)
