MaxJax lifting pads and locking mechanism
G’day mates! I love the Aussie accent! ; ) I can put on a pretty good Aussie accent, but I have no Aussie in me! lol Now what’s this accent thing have to do with Classic Cars and Tools! nothing, just having a little fun ; )
I wanted to share a little information about the lifting pad/extensions and the locking mechanism on the MaxJax. It’s not asked about that I see and feel worth mentioning. A low ceiling has its disadvantages for sure, but the MaxJax makes it more tolerable vs. using a floor jack and jack stands! I cannot imagine having to go back to a floor jack again!
When I started my project truck (a 59 Chevy truck, of which the build is on CC&T), I forgot about the cab being so tall! I can take the truck up to the first notch, and forget the second cause my truck won’t get that high. Or in the pic here, I take the truck up as high as I dare, then place the low tall jack stands, then remove the MaxJax column on the drivers side and move it out of the way, what the MaxJax is also known for, if you don’t need it, unbolt it and move it out of the way!
In the self-made crude video below, for some reason I could not get the locking rod into the hole! lol It’s funny to me or a blooper, but believe me, the locking rod is easy to get in! It’s a simple concept and it’s not really a “mechanism”, it’s simply a rod that goes completely through the column, then slowly lower the car/truck/whatever, and the carriages of each MJ column rests on the rods! or if you’re just using one column, use just one rod of course!

This is obviously the first level of the pad with no extensions. So for low riding cars, maybe like a Vette, one could get this level beneath it. Some folks owning low riding cars may have to drive up on some 2″ x 12″s under each wheel, then they’d be able to get the lowest level of the MJ under the car.
Next is the 3″ extension which come with the first order of the MJ. As you can see the measurement of the pads, these work great with most cars like my 67 Mustang! Which by the way, is the only car I own that will make it to the top notch on the MJ with 1-2″ to spare from touching the ceiling!
With my Mustang pointed into the garage (note on the 3″extensions), I can’t open the garage door all the way.
But backing my mustang in allows my garage door to come all the way up. ; ) Now I can sit on my roll around stool and work comfortably under the car! Awesome! Since this picture I have mounted my pump unit on the back garage wall and lengthened my hydraulic hose as needed.
The 6″ extension~! I put an exclamation as I just recently got these! These do not come with the MaxJax on the first order, these have to be purchased separately. I don’t have a pic to show, but just the other day I put these to good use by getting my 59 Apache up in the air. The frame of the truck is greatly recessed and the 3″ extension will not reach the frame, so I was having to use 4 x 6 blocks which wasn’t the smartest idea, but worked. The 6″ extensions work great and enhances safety! No more use of the 4 x 6 blocks! I’m happy!
Well, that’s it for this little blog; ) I hope this has shed some light on these topics. I’ve kind of become an expert on being an owner of a MaxJax! I’d like to think so anyway! If you should have any questions, I’d be more than happy to answer what I can. If I can’t answer the questions, my good friends at www.GESUSA.com can!
